Thinking Big About Small Companies

A New Venture

June 5th, 2018 | Posted by Torin in General | Investing | Uncategorized

I am pleased to tell you that I have partnered with a longtime colleague, James F. Basili, to form a new firm, Lightsail Capital. Lightsail employs the same concentrated investment strategy as Monte Sol, but does so through a single pooled investment fund rather than many separately managed accounts. As part of this transition, Monte Sol ceased operations during the second quarter of 2018.

Jim is an exceptionally talented and intelligent individual, and I am not the first investor who has sought to partner with him. Jim was formerly the owner of Blacktree Capital Management, and before that he was a Partner and co-founder at Kinderhook Partners, a hedge fund focused on small capitalization securities. Prior to Kinderhook, Jim worked in venture capital and strategy consulting. Jim graduated cum laude from Harvard University in 1997.

Jim and I met five years ago and immediately recognized how similar we were in philosophy and temperament. We began evaluating companies together, and found our collaboration quite fruitful. Working in tandem quickly became the norm for us when looking at new companies. The vast majority of the investments I have evaluated for Monte Sol over the past five years—both investments we have made and investments we have passed on—are companies that I researched in concert with Jim, with each of us sharing equal analytical responsibilities.

Jim and I thrilled to have begun. We are often traveling to meet with current and potential investors. If you are a qualified or accredited investor and you would like to learn more, send me an e-mail and we will reply with more information.
